All the knowledge, experience and relationships we built as a team during my 15 years living and working in Indonesia finally come together in PT (MA) KINI FURNITURE.
After graduation, I was destined to follow in the footsteps of my father: get a secure job with a steady paycheck.
My sense for adventure and my restless nature made me delay this set course in life. At the age of 25 I moved to Indonesia to help my friend to set up the Via Via travelers café in Yogyakarta.
I immediately fell in love with this country and saw the vast opportunities it had to offer me. It soon became clear to me that I was destined to build my life far away from the security of my native country, my family and friends.
Without any experience in the furniture industry, with a bit of luck and a lot of support from my first time buyers and employees, we started our first production company in 1996. It has been a roller coaster ride since!
We experienced many good times. But we had to face several severe set backs as well. During those hard times we could always rely on the support of our buyers and employees.
Due to the Asian economical crisis (’97-’98), the fall of the Suharto regime, the impact of 9/11 on the biggest Muslim country in the world and the global economic meltdown (’2008-present) our comfort zone was tested several times.
We never lost sight of our core values: do business in a sustainable way, be honest to yourself, your employees and your costumers.
This is how our mission statement matured:
At PT KINI we aim to create value for good costumers and jobs for good people with mutual respect and understanding in a sustainable manner.
KINI is the Indonesian word for ‘now’, ‘the present time’. I am turning 40 somewhere this year. According to the ancient Romans at the age of 40 you become a ‘senior’. Time to get all the dots connected ‘now’!
Knowing that the learning curve is far from completed, I am excited to start the second half of my live. Many challenges lay ahead, but I have learned that the journey is more important than the destination.
Are you willing to become part of this journey into the next decade?
